Yeah I had to give this one a 5 because the production values and overall polish are so high. I would ordinarily hesitate to give a 5 for something that's not really a "new" game, but I did for this one because the control, the nice look, and the overall feel of the game made it seem like a new experience. I noticed a bit of framerate struggling too at the high detail setting, but it was just really worth it in this case. Nice piece of work.

Very original version of the popular breakout game. Byron was literally thinking outside the box when he created Chaos Ball Extreme. You'll see what I mean when you play it.
He has added a very interesting feature to the main menu: You get to choose from 5 levels of graphic richness, from simple to sophisticated. There are two modes of the game, the first being "Survival" consisting of one long level, and the regular mode that follows the "Game Start" link.
The upper part of the screen contains a post of your score, the level you're in, a stop watch, and relative to the game space, a very useful Pause button. I didn't seize what the two records are. When I played they didn't seem to show the cumulative progress of my score and time.
Be prepared to get a little sea sick at first: Byron achieves the sensation of floating in outer space by tipping the angle of the game space from right to left relative to a central point axis, sliding it up and down, zooming in and out, all with a delicate motion. The responsiveness of the paddle is also carefully animated to emulate the slow motion at zero gravity.
The effects of gravity were achieved by using the popular
Farseer Physics engine
. Notice how the bricks get "shaken" when hit, nice touch.
I am very glad to see the work put into the graphical aspect of this game. Byron points out that this application is resource intensive and that for best performance, you should close all other browsers while playing.
I believe I experienced the lagginess Byron warns us about. I felt the whole animation got slightly stuck quite often. It is most noticeable on the ball's trajectory, even on the first level of the "graphics details" option and with all other browsers closed like Byron recommends. I don't think this affected my performance though.
Level 10 really got my heart pumping with the paddle going out of sight. The ray coming out of it takes a new level of importance for it's what's going to keep you from missing the ball.
I was completely hypnotized by CBE, as if time had stopped, until I reached level 16. It is a hard one that doesn't depend on the players skill so much. I spent way too much time in it before I gave up, so I don't know how many more levels he's added so far.
Overall I enjoyed very much playing Chaos Ball Extreme. Thanks for the treat Byron!
